DoT approves transfer of Tikona’s 4G spectrum to Bharti Airtel

December 05, 2017

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has granted approval to the transfer of Tikona Digital Networks’ spectrum in 2300 MHz band in Rajasthan to Bharti Airtel, following the latter’s acquisition of Tikona’s 4G division earlier this year.

The DoT had imposed a penalty of Rs 24.3 million on Tikona for a three month delay in roll out of wireless broadband service in Rajasthan.

As per the Broadband Wireless Auction rules of 2010, all the successful bidders are required to roll out networks for broadband services within five years of effective date of spectrum allocation. Tikona was obliged to begin offering services in Rajasthan by November 2015, but missed this target by three months, commercially launching in February 2016.

However, following the payment of the fine in October 2017, the DoT has now given clearance to transfer the frequencies to Bharti Airtel. Bharti Airtel completed the acquisition of the rest of Tikona’s 4G operations in August 2017.
