Samsung tops global smartphone sales during quarter ended September, 2017, says Gartner

Samsung has grabbed lead position in golabl smartphone sales to end user with a market share of 22.3 per cent in the quarter ended September, 2017, said research firm Gartner. Apple followed Samsung, with 11.9 per cent market share. Meanwhile, Huawei stood third with 383 million units sold in the third quarter accounting for 9.5 per cent of the market.

In the second quarter of 2017, Samsung had accounted for 20.7 per cent of total smartphone sales whereas Apple, 13.7 per cent. Samsung's smartphone sales recorded a double-digit increase of 19.3 per cent in the quarter ended September, 2017.

According to Gartner, Samsung’s flagship devices like the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and Note 8 smartphones have increased demand for Samsung smartphones, helping it secure first position in global sales.

Apple’s sales remained strong in many emerging markets, including India owing to the continued popularity of legacy iPhones. In the Asia Pacific region, both Samsung and Huawei experienced healthy demand along with Xiaomi and Vivo.

Xiaomi achieved the highest growth among all vendors, exhibiting an 80 per cent increase in the quarter. Apart from China, India continues to be the biggest market for Xiaomi but growing sales in Latin America and Russia are also boosting its sales.
