Xiaomi leads in smartphone sales in 50 major cities, says IDC

According to a report by the International Data Corporation, Xiaomi has taken the lead in 50 major cities of India, registering a growth of 120 per cent in these cities during the quarter ended September 2017 over the quarter ended June 2017. Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 4 in particular accounted for more than 40 per cent of the vendor’s sales during the quarter and also emerged as the highest selling model in the 50 major cities of India.

Meanwhile, Samsung slipped to second position with 15 per cent quarterly growth. However, Samsung continued to dominate in the majority of the cities with Galaxy J2, J7 Max, J7 Prime and J7 Nxt together accounting for 50 per cent of its total sales.

Lenovo (including Motorola) stood third with a steady growth rate of 8 per cent in the quarter. OPPO rose to fourth position in the quarter. Vivo on the other hand slipped to fifth position owing to marginal decline in its sales due to reduced channel spends.

According to the report, 50 major cities accounted for 50 per cent of smartphone sales in the quarter, growing by 27 per cent from the previous quarter. Tier I cities recorded a growth of 29 per cent in the quarter.

Meanwhile, Bhopal, Gurgaon and Jaipur emerged as the fastest growing Tier II cities in terms of smartphone sales. Each of the cities grew by more than 40 per cent from the previous quarter.
