Vamshi Reddy, co-founder and chief executive officer of Apalya Technologies, has spent the majority of his 25-year career in the IT industry. After completing his B.Tech degree, he did brief stints as faculty at different educational institutions. Thereafter, he moved to the US and worked with leading IT companies, including Cisco Systems, in various roles for nine years. This professional journey helped him discover the entrepreneur in him and he decided to move back to India to establish Apalya in partnership with Shiva.

Apalya has been operating in the Indian telecom industry for over a decade now, with Reddy being instrumental in driving the growth and shareholder value of the company. Under his guidance, the company pioneered the concept of offering OTT services in India.

“The target is to expand the coverage of our solutions beyond India to reach international markets. We aim to be the default OTT player that customers can trust to deploy OTT services,” he says. However, developing business models that can be optimised for different markets and customers is a challenge.

While building Apalya from its inception, there have been a lot of exciting moments for Reddy. Among these, there are two assignments that stand out in particular for him. The first was building and operating the Tata Photon TV, a dongle-based TV, around eight years ago. The second was enabling live streaming services for optimising the video offerings of Bharti Airtel and Vodafone India on their 3G networks.

Commenting on emerging trends in the Indian telecom space, Reddy says that operators are going to redefine their offerings and transition from being traditional service providers to those offering innovative solutions. In this context, services like OTT would play a big role and become a critical element of the telecom roadmap.

Reddy sees himself as an enabler and feels that his key strength lies in empowering people. “I have a very hands-off management style and believe in using people’s strengths to drive business operations,” he says.

A fitness enthusiast, Reddy likes running as well as playing tennis. He also enjoys watching movies. His wife, who has a culinary degree from the California Culinary Academy, is also an entrepreneur and successfully runs her own restaurant in Hyderabad. Their children, a son and a daughter, are both high school students.
