Sarbani Bhatia, senior vice-president, IT with the Jagran Group, brings to the table rich experience of nearly three decades in managing IT systems and processes. An alumni of BITS Pilani, she started her career with ICIM, the Indian subsidiary of International Computers Limited, where she gained exposure in various aspects of software development by servicing  clients across various industries. She joined the Jagran Group at an early stage, when automation and computerisation were restricted to batch processing in the electronic data processing department and the volume of transactions was limited. She has been instrumental in creating robust systems and processes, putting in place a home-grown ERP, analytics and workflow portal, Jconnect, which serves the 10,000-plus workforce across branches and offices of the group’s various verticals and publications.

“Jconnect is a context-rich and responsive platform with strong employee collaboration features where employees can manage and handle information without IT assistance, access their workflows even while on the move and managers can monitor performance through dashboards and analytics,” says Bhatia. “This is an initiative to optimise connections among people, processes and systems of the Jagran Group.”

Bhatia’s management style is inclusive, collaborative and open. In fact, she prides herself on her people qualities and her connect with the team, built through empathy and understanding. She believes her strength lies in her ability to take on challenges without getting intimidated by trials and predicaments, her agile execution skills, and efficient and timely delivery on work assignments.

On where the IT and telecom sectors is headed, she says that cloud and hosted services will be the dominant players in the coming years. “The adoption of virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence and 3D printing will also pick up. OTT players that stream content directly over the internet will gain an edge over basic telecom service providers,” she notes. Also, the rate of penetration and use of smartphones and the internet will increase steadily.

Despite being a workaholic, Sarbani ensures she takes out time to relax over the weekend with her family and friends. Her husband, Prince, who runs a furniture business, and her daughter, Tanisha, a corporate lawyer, share her passion for travelling and the family loves to take off on vacations whenever they can work around their professional commitments.
