Suneet Singh Tuli, founder and CEO of DataWind, is a serial entrepreneur. In the past 24 years, he has launched several successful ventures wherein he has been involved with the development of patented technologies for scanning, printing and imaging products that have received awards and accolades, including recognition by the Guinness World Records. “DataWind’s initial public offering (IPO) on the Toronto Stock Exchange in June 2014 represents the third IPO of my career. My two previous ventures conducted IPOs on the NASDAQ,” says Tuli.

DataWind is a leading developer of wireless web access products and services, and among the largest suppliers of tablet computers in India. Its internet delivery platform offers low-cost connectivity solutions by bundling affordable computing devices with inexpensive one-year prepaid internet browsing service plans. According to Tuli, “There are 300 million people who cannot read or write. Not because they are not interested in it, but because they cannot afford it. Our target is to connect those people by providing affordable internet services and devices.”

Tuli recalls his most memorable assignment as working on a breakthrough technology that solves the bandwidth limitations of cellular networks by accelerating content delivery by factors of 10x to 30x. According to Tuli, the lack of a robust digital infrastructure in the country is one of the key challenges that must be addressed to realise the dream of a digital India. A well-planned internet penetration programme can help build a digitally strong India. What is needed is a well-thought-out framework that ensures democratisation of technology as well as the availability of affordable connectivity at the grassroots level. “Affordable tablets, smartphones and phablets are very much in the market; what we lack is internet connectivity and educational content. There is a need to collectively work towards correcting the above,” he says.

Tuli graduated in 1990 with a bachelor’s in applied science and engineering from the University of Toronto. Despite tight schedules, Tuli manages to maintain a healthy balance between his professional and personal lives through meditation and listening to kirtan. “I spend quality time with my family. My father is my mentor and guiding force. My brother Raja is the co-founder and chief technology officer of DataWind. My wife is a trained classical singer and we have four children,” he says.
