Telecom subscriber base reached 1.21 billion in June 2017, reports TRAI
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has reported that the telecom subscriber base grew by about half a per cent to cross the 1.21 billion mark in June 2017.
The total number of telephone subscribers in India increased by 0.49 per cent from 1,204.98 million at the end of May 2017 to 1,210.84 million at the end of June 2017. The total number of wireless subscribers stood at 1,186.84 million whereas wireline subscribers stood at 24 million by the end of June 2017. As per TRAI, the mobile segment accounted for the majority share of growth with a net addition of over 6 million new customers.
The number of broadband subscribers increased from 291.61 million at the end of May 2017 to 300.84 million at the end of June 2017 with a monthly growth rate of 3.17 per cent.
The overall wireline teledensity declined from 1.88 per cent at the end of May 2017 to 1.86 per cent at the end of June 2017. Urban and rural wireline teledensity was 5.01 per cent and 0.42 per cent respectively during the said time period.
The overall mobile subscriber base in the country grew by 6 million to 1,186 million at the end of June 2017. Meanwhile, mobile operators jointly added about 10 million new customers.
Further, as per TRAI, out of the eleven telecom operators, only Reliance Jio Infocom Limited, Bharti Airtel, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular managed to add new customers. Meanwhile, the loss of mobile subscribers by Tata Teleservices, Reliance Communications, Telenor, Aircel, Sistema Shyam and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited held back the growth rate.
