BSNL to collaborate with Bharti Airtel and RJIL for sharing dark fibre

August 10, 2017

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is planning to collaborate with private telecom operators - Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) for sharing its dark, or unused, optic fibre. The move is a part of its efforts to double its revenue from network sharing to about Rs 30 billion in 2017-18.

The state run operator stated that RJIL and Bharti Airtel had approached it for dark fibre sharing. BSNL has the largest optic fibre based network in the industry spread over nearly 700,000 kilometres throughout the country.

BSNL initiated its collaboration strategy in 2015, which helped it generate close to Rs 15 billion as additional revenue in 2016-17 through active and passive telecom infrastructure sharing with incumbent operators. Of this, Rs 10 billion were attributed to tower sharing.
