Tenders for BharatNet Phase II rollout to be issued within next three months

The tenders for the network infrastructure roll out under the Phase II of BharatNet project are likely to be floated by September/October 2017.

Further, private players including telecom operators will be eligible to bid for these tenders which will involve activities such as deploying of cable, provisioning of last mile access services, etc.

Currently, six states - Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh have already submitted the detailed project report (DPR) for the Phase II roll out.

BharatNet project aims to bring broadband connectivity to India’s 250,000 gram panchayats. Optical fibre cable has already been rolled out in more than 100,000 gram panchayats under Phase I, though active services are yet to make their way in most of these gram panchayats. Under Phase II, connectivity will be provided in 150,000 gram panchayats by March, 2019.

Recently, the Union cabinet approved a budget of Rs 42 billion for the project; of which Rs 18.7 billion has been earmarked for Phase II.
