TRAI to meet operators on July 21, 2017 for seeking views on setting floor price

July 17, 2017

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has decided to meet all telecom operators in the industry on July 21, 2017 to seek their views on setting a floor price for voice and data tariffs. The move comes after telecom operators had recently demanded the setting of a floor price for voice and data tariffs in their meeting with the inter-ministerial group.

Therefore, the TRAI has decided to meet operators to explain their views on 'minimum floor price' for tariffs, and suggest the formula for fixing such a rate. Further, TRAI would also seek the rationale for the floor price demand, and has asked operators to give a detailed presentation to support their arguments. The regulator is also expected to ask the operators why an upper ceiling for tariffs is not similarly justified.

Meanwhile, TRAI is planning to begin consultations for conducting the next round of spectrum auctions by September 2017, although the government is unlikely to sell airwaves during the current financial year, owing to the high level of debt and competition in the industry. As per TRAI, although the consultations would begin in September 2017 and last till December 2017 or January 2018, the Department of Telecommunications would decide when to conduct the auctions.
