BSNL adopts NG-OTN technology to deliver up to 1,000 Mbps download speed
State-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched a project for the implementation of next generation optical transport network (NG-OTN) that would enable it to deliver broadband speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps.
According to the government, the project has a total outlay of Rs 3.3 billion and would be implemented across 100 major cities including state capitals in three phases during the current financial year. Further, BSNL has already implemented the project in 44 cities.
As per BSNL, the project aims to enhance the capacity of BSNL’s optical fibre infrastructure from existing 10G to 100G. This would increase the back-end capacity of the operator by 10 times and enable it to launch new plans with faster speeds. Further, the upgradation would also enable the operator to provide a speed of up to 1 Gbps on its fibre-to-the-home network across state capitals and other top cities.
Meanwhile, the NG-OTN project would also be helpful for government projects like BharatNet, State-wide area network and the National Knowledge Network.
