DoT planning to provide viability gap funding to speed-up implementation of BharatNet project

July 13, 2017

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is planning to provide viability gap funding (VGF) for the BharatNet project to encourage private sector participation, especially in providing last-mile connectivity. Further, DoT would reportedly be floating a notification within the cabinet soon to seek approval on the issue.

According to DoT, the government is planning to provide VGF so as to speed up the implementation of the project. Further, VGF would also enable the government to provide internet connectivity to 250,000 gram panchayats by December 2018, as per the deadline.

To this end, DoT has set a target of connecting 500-1,000 villages with gigabit-capable passive optical network (GPON) equipment every day. Further, DoT has been in talks with certain private players in the telecom industry, which have shown an interest in maintaining last-mile connectivity.
