BSNL to shortlist bidders for the Chennai-Andaman submarine cable project

State-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is planning to soon shortlist bidders for the Chennai-Andaman submarine cable project. The project, which is being funded by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Universal Service Obligation Fund has a total cost of around Rs 11.32 billion which includes Rs 8 billion for laying the cable and Rs 3.32 billion for maintenance and managing the project for next five years from the day of operation. Further, BSNL is the executing agency and Telecommunications Consultants India Limited is the consulting agency for the project.

According to BSNL’s tender, the bidder should be a company with a total turnover of Rs 14 billion or $200 million cumulatively during the last three financial years (2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17). Further, the bidding company should have successfully executed a minimum of two global submarine cable system projects during the last 10 years, as on the date of bid submission, each of which should be of at least 1,000 km of submarine cable system, out of which at least one should be with deployment depth of minimum 3,500 metres.

Although BSNL has floated the tender, DoT will take a final call in selecting the company for implementing the project.
