DoT planning to electrify over 10,000 telecom towers to reduce diesel consumption at sites

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is working on a project to electrify around 10,486 telecom towers in use by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) as well as other operators. The project aims to reduce the consumption of diesel at tower sites.

The project is being undertaken in coordination with the Ministry of Power, NITI Aayog, Rural Electrification Corporation and the telecom industry for the electrification of non-electrified telecom towers under the Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojna.

As per the DoT, around 5,334 telecom towers have already been electrified as of March 31, 2017. This includes 4,796 (out of total 9,447) towers pertaining to the Tower and Infrastructure Providers Association and 538 (out of total 1,039) towers pertaining to BSNL.
