TRAI invites companies for setting up a pilot project of public Wi-Fi hotspots

July 10, 2017

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has invited all companies, application providers and hardware or software providers for setting up a pilot project of public Wi-Fi hotspots, known as Public Data Offices (PDOs). To this end, the regulator has issued the broad objectives of the pilot program along with the guidelines and pre-requisites for companies who want to participate.

According to TRAI, PDOs would be similar to public calling offices, wherein these companies will provide pay-as-you-go sachet sized Wi-Fi facilities priced between Rs 2 and Rs 20, making internet access affordable for the common public.

As per TRAI, the vision of the pilot program is to establish an open architecture based Wi-Fi Access Network Interface, which will allow users to fulfil a one-time enrolment procedure for availing services through know-your-customer and mobile one time password methods and enable them to access Wi-Fi services by purchasing sachet sized data packs. Further, the pilot program would help in identifying the advantages and problem areas before the national proliferation of such Wi-Fi hotspots.
