MTNL requests government to extend validity of licence for Delhi and Mumbai circle till 2021

June 27, 2017

State-run telecom operator Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has requested the government to extend the validity of its mobile licence for the Delhi and Mumbai circle by two more years (till 2021) at no extra cost.

MTNL’s licence for the two telecom circles is currently valid till 2019, post exhaustion of which, the operator would have to renew it. However, the operator has requested for the extension of validity as its mobile licence for the two service areas remained underused during the first four years of the permit’s lifespan for various reasons. These reasons include late start of services due to appreciable time taken for the settlement of the litigation pertaining to the grant of licence and spectrum allotted around 2.5 years after grant of the licence.

Further, the operator has also claimed that initially, the geographical coverage of its mobile licence was not at par with the private telecom operators. As per MTNL, its licence was ‘non standard’ in the beginning and the area of operation was restricted to Delhi Municipal Corporation and Mumbai Municipal Corporation. As per the operator, the licence was brought at par with other private operators only in 2001, when it was allowed to extend its coverage to Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Noida and Gurgaon areas of Delhi NCR and the Navi Mumbai and Kalyan areas of Mumbai.
