Non-availability of CENVAT for infrastructure providers a regressive step, says TAIPA

June 16, 2017

According to the Tower and Infrastructure Providers Association (TAIPA), the non-availability ofcentral value added tax (CENVAT) credit for the infrastructure sector under the goods and services tax (GST) regime is a regressive step that would escalate the cost of telecom services.

The move comes after the finance ministry recently permitted telecom operators to carry forward unavailed central value added tax (CENVAT) credit to the GST regime.

As per TAIPA, the non-availability of CENVAT credit would impact the overall rollout of telecom infrastructure across the country, especially in rural areas. Further, this would also increase the financial burden on the already debt-laden telecom sector, TAIPA said.
