TAIPA seeks action against diesel pilferage at towers in Punjab

May 17, 2017

Tower and Infrastructure Providers’ Association (TAIPA), the industry body that represents telecom tower companies in India, has approached Punjab’s director general of police (DGP) to help prevent the malpractices of diesel pilferage from the towers in the state.

Significant amount of diesel consumed in Punjab is pilfered. More than 15 first information reports (FIRs) have been lodged for serious offences such as damage to property, disruption of telecom networks etc.

The field technicians often find it difficult to perform their duties peacefully as some unscrupulous elements are engaged in high diesel pilferage in Punjab. Infact, in some scenarios, some technicians are also involved who then work as mafia in pilfering diesel. They abuse the telecom and power equipment at sites with the objective of pocketing the diesel, thereby causing damage to the towers.

In the Punjab region, about 35 million telecom subscribers are served through approximately 15,000 mobile tower sites. Further, over 20,000 people are directly and indirectly employed with the telecom industry.
