Chinese smartphones account for more than half of total smartphone shipments in India, says IDC

May 16, 2017

According the International Data Corporation (IDC), the share of China-based smartphone vendors make up around 51.4 per cent of the smartphone shipments in the country.

As per IDC, China-based vendors reported a 16.9 per cent sequential growth in the smartphone shipments in India during the quarter ended March 2017. In comparison to this, the shipments of domestic handset vendors declined from 40.5 per cent during the quarter ended March 2016 to 13.5 per cent during the corresponding quarter in 2017.

Further, the dominance of China-based handsets in the market has led to an increase in the average selling price of smartphones, from $131 during quarter ended March 2016 to $155 during the corresponding quarter in 2017, IDC said. Moreover, 62.2 per cent devices shipped by China-based vendors were equipped with 13 megapixel and more as primary camera.

Therefore, as per IDC, intense competition from China-based vendors, which is expected to increase in the coming quarters would continue to be a major challenge for domestic vendors. To this end, the revival of domestic vendors is necessary for the Indian smartphone market, the research firm said.
