RJIL in talks with DoT to lease out fibre for BharatNet project

May 05, 2017

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) is reportedly in talks with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to lease out either dark or unused fibre under the government’s BharatNet initiative.

As per DoT, the operator approached the government for an opportunity to connect towers using its fibre in the states of Haryana and Karnataka. To this end, the operator is currently conducting a feasibility study at different locations in the two states where it would like to lease out the fibre depending upon a ‘business case’ scenario.

If the talks are successful, RJIL would become the first telecom operator in the country to lease fibre for the government’s BharatNet initiative.
