Arun Karna comes with rich experience of close to three decades in the IT and telecom industry. He has been associated with AT&T India for more than 16 years and is currently working as managing director of AT&T’s global network services in India. He is responsible for overseeing the company’s operations and customer engagements across the country.

Karna sees four major trends emerging in the Indian telecom space - the convergence of the three C’s, namely, computing, communications and content; a shift of critical enterprise applications towards the cloud, which is dramatically changing consumption and traffic patterns on data networks; the convergence of cloud and mobility; and the virtualisation of network applications and connectivity due to greater usage of network function virtualisation and software-defined networking technologies.

Commenting on his most memorable assignment, Karna says, “About four years ago, one of our India-based global customers chose AT&T to transform its worldwide network. We had to convert and consolidate many disparate networks from a multitude of suppliers around the globe, creating a single, homogenous, fully managed AT&T MPLS network that covered more than 200 sites. We had to do this while making sure that there was no disruption in the customer’s live traffic. To me, the most exciting and satisfying part of the project was the fact that we got to work with some of the finest minds in the business. It was a great experience and was hugely satisfying,” he says.

Karna firmly believes in situational leadership and is convinced that the role of a leader in today’s fast-changing world is to provide direction and encouragement, and let the team do its job.

Karna holds an engineering degree in electronics and telecommunications from Pune University and a post-graduate diploma in business management from IMT Ghaziabad.

Most of his spare time is spent with his family - his wife, a qualified nutritionist and an MBA in marketing and HR, and their seven-year-old son. “I am an extremely private person. Most weekends are family time for me, with outings, movies, and so on. I love to read to my son. He’s about to go into Grade 2 at school. He trains at a football academy and is a big Lego enthusiast,” he says. Karna also makes time to exercise for 90 minutes at least four days a week. He has been mentoring a young tech start-up for the past 14 months as well.
