BSCCL initiatives trial run for transmission of bandwidth to Tripura as part of deal with BSNL

December 01, 2015

The Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL) has initiated trials for transmission of bandwidth to India through the northeastern Akhaura-Agartala frontier. The commercial transmission is set to begin during December 2015.

Earlier in 2015, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and BSCCL signed an agreement, under which the former import 10 Gbps bandwidth for Tripura, from Bangladesh. In return, BSCCL is expected to earn revenues of up to Rs 82.7 million per year. BSCCL manages Bangladesh's submarine cable having bandwidth of over 200 Gbps, and has the capacity to export bandwidth up to 50 Gbps after meeting domestic demand.

According to BSCCL, the two companies had set up structural links for bandwidth transmission on November 16, 2015 connecting Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited's optical fibre at zero point on the border. However, the trial transmission was delayed as the Indian counterpart could not complete technical preparations to receive the bandwidth.

According to officials, the deal can be extended for two more years and bandwidth price could be reviewed after a year. Meanwhile, Assam and Meghalaya have also shown interest in importing bandwidth from Bangladesh.
